At Greenstone Yarn, one of my favorite things to offer is the Sustainable Skeins Program — a way to give perfectly good prototype, test, or one-of-a-kind skeins a second life. Each bundle is curated from my small-batch dye sessions, and every purchase helps reduce waste, promote sustainability, and support cancer research.
But I know that sometimes it can feel a little overwhelming to plan a project when you’re not starting with a specific colorway in mind — especially with mystery bundles! So let’s talk about what you can make with your Sustainable Skeins bundles, whether you choose a 2-skein set or a 4-skein set.
🌿 2 Skein Bundles — Small Projects, Big Impact
With two skeins (typically around 800 yards total for fingering weight), you have so many options for beautiful, satisfying projects. Here are a few favorites:
✨ Shawls & Wraps
Perfect for: lightweight shawls, crescent wraps, or small rectangular scarves.
Patterns: Coles River Kerchief by Toni Lipsey (L) and Sophie Scarf by PetiteKnits (R)
Ideas:
Use one skein as the main color, and the second for contrast stripes or a border.
If you receive a mix of tonal + variegated, pair them together for a lovely balance of color movement and grounding.
✨ Cowls & Infinity Scarves
Quick to knit or crochet, and a great way to showcase interesting colors.
Try holding both skeins together for a marled effect.

✨ Hats & Accessories
Knit matching or coordinating hats and mitts sets.
Play with simple textures to let the color shine.

🌿 4 Skein Bundles — Sweaters, Shawls & More
Four skeins (about 1600 yards total for fingering weight) open the door for larger, more involved projects:
✨ Sweaters & Tops
Great for simple stockinette or textured pullovers that let hand-dyed yarn take center stage.
Athabasca Falls Pullover by MJ's Off the Hooks Design (L) and Hey Sailor by Andrea Mowry
Depending on sizing and yardage, you may have enough for:
Short-sleeved summer tops
Fingering-weight cardigans
Light layering sweaters
✨ Large Shawls & Stoles
Many larger shawl patterns call for 1200–1600 yards.
You can use tonals as base with variegated as an accent border or in lace sections.
Omar Wrap by Toni Lipsey (L) and Inclinations Cowl by Andrea Mowry (R)
✨ Blankets & Baby Items
Mix and match colors for cozy lap blankets, baby blankets, or heirloom gifts.
Crocheted granny square blankets are a wonderful way to use multiple colorways.

🌿 Customizing Your Bundle: Make a Request!
Because each Sustainable Skeins bundle is created from my available stock, I do my best to honor any requests you leave at checkout. You can note things like:
“Cool winter vibes”
“Neutrals and earth tones”
“Surprise me — just no pink, please!”
“Soft spring pastels”
“Autumn at Oxford”
While I can’t guarantee exact colorways, your notes help me pull a bundle that fits your general vibe as closely as possible.
🌿 A Few Extra Tips
Pair your Sustainable Skeins with your stash! Many customers mix these bundles with yarns they already own to create beautiful fades or multi-color projects.
Don’t overthink it. Tonals and subtle variegated skeins often play very nicely together, even when you're surprised by the combo.
Feel free to email me! If you’re unsure what to make after your bundle arrives, I’m always happy to suggest pattern ideas based on what you received.
🌿 Stitch With Purpose
Every time you purchase from the Sustainable Skeins Program, you’re not only giving beautiful yarn a second life — you're also supporting cancer research and making hand-dyed yarn more accessible. That’s something to feel great about every time you cast on.
